NICC Talk: Fair Practice

NL Deze NICC Talk is voortgevloeid uit de werkgroep ‘Leven als een kunstenaar’. Tijdens het event neemt Céline Mathieu het woord om over haar artistieke praktijk in relatie tot Fair Practice te spreken.'Parameters' is een artist talk die (in het Engels) gegeven wordt. Céline Mathieu’s huidige onderzoek 'Conditions for Raw Materials' bestudeert hoe je tentoonstellingen kan maken zonder opslagruimte en een bewustzijn omtrent de levensduur van materialen voor en na de tentoonstelling. Daarnaast streeft CDFRM naar speelse transparantie rond de financiële omstandigheden van kunstenaars (honoraria, productie budgetten e.a.) en het gebruik van fictie als instrument om tentoonstellingen te archiveren. Leven en werk lopen voortdurend in elkaar over, de kunstenaar leeft tussen steden vanuit enkele handtassen en werkt aan conceptuele en zintuiglijke installaties die audio, geur, tekst, performance en verschillende materialen omvatten. 

Vervolgens komt Kunstenpunt de gesprekstool rond Fair Pay voorstellen. ‘Wat is fair?’ sensibiliseert voor eerlijk samenwerken binnen de beeldende kunst, zoals correct vergoeden, het voorzien van een veilige en inclusieve werkomgeving, transparantie over informatie en verwachtingen, elkaar kansen geven om te leren en te groeien, om in vertrouwen te kunnen samenwerken. Werken in de sector werd lang gekenmerkt door machtsrelaties, uitbuiting en onderlinge concurrentie. Dit werd vaak goedgepraat met argumenten als “kunstenaars werken uit passie en niet voor geld”, “de uitnodiging draagt bij aan je zichtbaarheid en reputatie” en “andere kunstenaars zullen onze voorwaarden wél aanvaarden”. De omslag naar eerlijk samenwerken wordt nu gemaakt.

‘Wat is fair?’ Bestaat uit 20 cases, die met een titel en trefwoorden worden omschreven. In elke case worden andere spelers en aspecten uit de beeldende kunst betrokken zoals onderzoek, creatie, presentatie, publiekswerking en verkoop. Met dit spel word je bewust van wat fair is of niet door je mening te geven over een case, naar anderen te luisteren en er met elkaar over te praten.

EN This NICC Talk grew out of the Focus Group ‘Living Like an Artist’. During the event, Céline Mathieu will take the floor with the artist talk 'Parameters' to talk about her artistic practice in relation to Fair Practice. ‘Parameters’ is an English-spoken artist talk. Céline Mathieu’s current research ‘Conditions for Raw Materials’ looks at how to make exhibitions without being left with storage and being conscious of the life of materials before and after the exhibition. CDFRM also seeks playful transparency around artist’s financial conditions (fees, production budgets e.a) and the use of fiction as a tool to archive exhibitions. Life and work conditions continuously bleeding into each other, the artist lives between cities from a few handbags, working on conceptual and sensory installations that encompass audio, scent, text, performance and different materials. 

Subsequently Kunstenpunt will present the conversation tool around Fair Pay. 'What is Fair?' raises awareness for  fair collaboration within the visual arts, such as correct compensation, providing a safe and inclusive work environment, transparency about information and expectations, giving each other opportunities to learn and grow, and to work together in trust. Working in the industry has long been shaped by power relations, exploitation and competition. This was often justified with arguments such as "artists work out of passion and not for money", "the invitation contributes to your visibility and reputation" and "other artists will accept our conditions". The shift to fairness is now being made.

'What is Fair?' consists of 20 cases, described with a title and keywords. Each case involves other players and aspects of the visual arts such as research, creation, presentation, public engagement and sales. With this game you become aware of what is fair or not by giving your opinion on a case, listening to others and talking about it with each other.
